A Prestige Office Development

James Durrans Group

Offices

The new office development for James Durrans Group represents a confident and contemporary addition to the Penistone landscape—an efficient, highly functional workplace that reflects both the company’s forward-looking ethos and the architectural ambition of the design team. Conceived with clarity and purpose, the building delivers strong architectural merit through its considered massing, material richness, and intelligent response to site constraints.

Set within a challenging topography, the scheme makes strategic use of significant level changes across the site to minimise its built footprint while maximising usable internal area. This approach not only preserves the surrounding context but also enables a dynamic spatial arrangement across four distinct levels: basement, lower ground, upper ground, and first floor. Access is elegantly resolved, with entry points from Saville Lane at upper ground level, the dedicated car park at lower ground, and a further connection via the basement—ensuring seamless circulation for staff and visitors alike.

THE PROCESS

Reinforcing its Industrial Heritage

Material selection plays a pivotal role in anchoring the building within its setting while asserting its contemporary identity. Smooth and pitch-faced Ashlar stonework lends civic weight and texture, referencing local vernacular traditions with a refined execution. Feature curtain wall glazing introduces transparency and rhythm, allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the plan and offering framed views outward. A raised seam roofing system adds sculptural definition to the roofline, while exposed structural steel elements articulate the building’s tectonic expression—celebrating its construction and reinforcing its industrial heritage.
